Advice on repairing electrician damage
Hi, I hope that someone can help an end user/customer with a quick query about repairs needed following a sparky's work.
I had a new plasterboard and skim suspended ceiling installed in my bathroom last May. The plasterer who did it produced a really nice finish and everything looked really crisp and clean around the six small downlighters in the ceiling.
As part of other work going on here I've needed one of the lighting circuits in the house re-wired. As part of this the sparky rewired the downlighters in the bathroom. However it looks like he used a JCB to prise the spots out of the ceiling. Every spot now has a visible 5-10mm crumbling ring of plasterboard around it. Three of the spots won't sit centrally anymore (they disappear up into the ceiling void if I try that) so have to be wedged to one side.
The sparky maintains that a bit of filler will make them good again. I have my doubts that for the worst holes that a bit of filler will have the strength to hold the lights in place and withstand any movement when changing the bulbs.
So my question is: will a bit of filler work; or do I need to cut out sections of damaged plasterboard, replace and skim?
Cheers for your help.

Re: Advice on repairing electrician damage
always a nightmare that m8 bit of filler wont do it will just crumble as nothing to fill to.plus you dont wont to go down avenue of having to cut boards back to joist. my own way of dealing with this is to use expanding foam witch will hold light firm when set trim it back to enable you to fill with a mix of handfull of bonding mixed with finish 50/50 fill in then cut back nice and tidy.must stress this is only my choice, others will have diff method but wirks for me .

The spark cuased the damage, so he coughs up for any remedials IMHO...

A bit of filler will do

I would remove any loose plasterboard carefully and pva the surface of bare visible gypsum, then build up the filler, wait it set then build up again until your flush to the surface of the existing plaster finish. Sand down until smooth, just be careful when pushing the down lighters back in.Last edited by Whitebeam; 06-10-2009 at 10:53 PM.
